Can You Walk on an EPDM Rubber Roof? Maintenance & Safety Guide
An EPDM roof should not be treated as a walking surface simply because the membrane is flexible. Whether anyone can access it depends on the deck, structure and protection provided. Repeated traffic or sharp debris can damage the covering, particularly around vulnerable details.
Before allowing roof access
- Confirm that the structure can support access and is not fragile.
- Use a designed access route or compatible protection where maintenance is expected.
- Keep furniture, tools and sharp objects off an unprotected membrane.
For inspection or cleaning, arrange safe professional access rather than testing the roof by stepping onto it.
Look closely at the details
The field membrane is only one part of an EPDM roof. Adhesives, seams, corners, outlets and wall terminations must be compatible and installed as specified. Ask how existing materials will be prepared and how the roof will be protected during future maintenance. A clear record of the installed system makes later repairs easier to specify.
