What Is Pitched Roofing? A Beginner's Guide to Sloped Roofs
A pitched roof uses sloping planes to direct water towards its eaves and drainage. Slate and tiles are common coverings, but the pitch must suit the selected product. Underlay, fixings and junctions provide essential support to the visible covering.
The main components
- The supporting structure creates the roof shape.
- Underlay, battens and fixings support the specified covering.
- Ridges, verges, valleys and flashings protect changes of direction and material.
When planning repairs, assess the complete system rather than assuming the visible tiles tell the whole story.
Junctions deserve as much attention as slopes
A pitched roof directs large volumes of water through valleys and towards eaves. Chimneys, roof windows and adjoining walls interrupt that route and need their own weathering details. When comparing work, check that those items are included. A new covering installed around unresolved junction defects may leave the original leak unchanged.
