Common Issues with GRP Roofs and How to Prevent Them
Common GRP problems include cracks at stressed details, poor bonding, damaged trims and drainage defects. A crack does not always mean the whole roof needs replacement, but its cause matters. Movement or moisture beneath the laminate can make a cosmetic patch short-lived.
Investigate before recoating
- Check whether cracking follows deck joints, corners or poorly supported edges.
- Assess the deck for moisture and movement.
- Inspect outlets, wall upstands and trims alongside the main surface.
Use a repair compatible with the installed system and correct the underlying defect before renewing the finish.
Preparation and handover matter
Ask the installer to identify the GRP system, its compatible substrate and the proposed treatment of deck joints, corners and trims. Suitable conditions are needed during application. At completion, retain the product details and photographs, and establish how the roof should be maintained and protected if another contractor needs access.
