Common Problems with Felt Roofs and How to Fix Them
Felt roofs can develop opened laps, blisters, splits and damage around edges or penetrations. Some defects are local, while others indicate trapped moisture or wider ageing. A repair should be chosen after checking the surrounding covering and the substrate beneath it.
Match the repair to the defect
- An opened lap needs a compatible repair with sound material to bond to.
- Repeated blistering calls for investigation of moisture and adhesion.
- Cracked edges or upstands need their movement and support checked.
Avoid treating every defect with general-purpose sealant; the repair needs to work with the existing roofing system.
Specify the system clearly
The quotation should identify the felt products and installation method, as well as the preparation below them. Record the treatment of edges, upstands and outlets; these details often determine whether an otherwise sound roof remains dry. Where previous repairs exist, ask whether they can remain or need to be removed to obtain a suitable repair surface.
