Natural vs. Synthetic Slate Roofing: Which Is Best?
Natural slate and manufactured slate alternatives differ in composition, appearance and installation requirements. 'Synthetic slate' covers more than one type of product, so ask exactly what is being offered. Similar-looking units can have different weights, sizes and fixing instructions.
Compare named products
- Review samples for texture, colour and consistency.
- Check pitch suitability, loading and fixings.
- Compare warranty terms and availability of matching replacements.
For a traditional building, establish whether changing to a manufactured alternative affects the appearance or requires further advice.
Retain sound material where practical
A slate inspection should distinguish the condition of the stone from that of its fixings, battens and underlay. Those components do not necessarily fail at the same time. Where renewal is proposed, ask whether suitable existing slates can be graded for reuse and how new units will match the retained roof. Include flashings and valley details in the scope.
