What Is Felt Roofing? Systems, Uses & What to Ask
Roofing felt is a broad term covering different bituminous roof products and systems. A basic shed covering and a specified multi-layer flat-roof system are not equivalent. Ask for the actual product and build-up rather than relying on the word 'felt'.
What to understand before choosing
- The intended building use and roof pitch.
- The number and type of layers and installation method.
- The condition of the supporting deck, insulation and drainage.
A quotation should identify the system and all junction details so you can compare genuinely equivalent work.
Specify the system clearly
The quotation should identify the felt products and installation method, as well as the preparation below them. Record the treatment of edges, upstands and outlets; these details often determine whether an otherwise sound roof remains dry. Where previous repairs exist, ask whether they can remain or need to be removed to obtain a suitable repair surface.
